PURCHASING BODY ARMOUR GUIDE

To ensure that you choose the best possible body armour for your needs, there are several things you should consider before purchasing.

To help you select the right body armour, here is a list of points to remember:

DETERMINE THE POSSIBLE THREATS YOU MAY ENCOUNTER

Do you expect to face ballistic (bullet) threats? Does it seem likely that you may have to deal with individuals using sharp weapons and need to wear additional stab/spike resistant body armour? These are important questions to consider as a ballistic vest may not be stab and spike resistant. Remember to consider all threat levels before buying body armour, to ensure you purchase the appropriate level of protection for your needs.

ESTABLISH HOW YOUR ARMOUR WILL BE WORN

Would you prefer to wear your body armour under your clothes (covert) or on top of your clothes (overt)? Do you need pockets in your armour? Would you like it to fasten in any particular way? You should also consider whether you need high-visibility or waterproof body armour.

ORDER THE CORRECT VEST FOR YOUR GENDER

Gender is extremely important when ordering a vest. When possible women should order a female vest. Female vests have been ergonomically shaped to fit the female body and could be a better and safer option for women.

KEEP YOUR HEIGHT IN MIND

Your vest should be appropriately fitted for your height and should not be too long or too short. For a vest to fit properly, it should reach your navel. A common misconception is that protective armour should reach your waist, which is untrue and could be detrimental. A vest that is too long can make it difficult to partake in daily activities such as sitting, bending and reaching.

Our recommendations for choosing the correct length are below:

  • If you are 5ft8 or shorter, ordering a vest in length "Short" may be the most appropriate fit.
  • If you are between 5ft8 and 6ft, ordering a vest in length "Normal" may be the most appropriate fit.
  • If you are over 6ft, ordering a vest in length "Long" may be the most appropriate fit.

BE REALISTIC

It is not always necessary to order the vest with the highest possible protection rating. Vests offering higher levels of protection are heavier than those with lower levels of protection, which can lead to the wearer becoming uncomfortable and removing their vest. If you are going to be wearing body armour regularly, your comfort is paramount. Only order the protection that you will realistically need.
